EN 45545-2 compliant protection for rolling stock, trackside infrastructure and depot maintenance.
Rail is one of the most regulated industries in the world — and for good reason. A fire on a passenger train in a tunnel, or a cable failure on a signalling system, can have consequences far beyond the immediate vehicle. Every component that runs through rolling stock must earn its place.
S Riley Fabrications firesleeve is specified across the UK rail network to protect hydraulic hoses, electrical cables, pneumatic lines and high-voltage harnesses from fire, heat, abrasion and environmental damage. Manufactured in Burnley to EN 45545-2 — the European fire protection standard for railway vehicles.
Made in Britain. Supplied to specification.
EN 45545-2 is the European standard governing fire behaviour of materials and components used in railway vehicles. It classifies materials across hazard levels (HL1, HL2, HL3) based on the risk to passengers and evacuation time in different train types and operating environments.
S Riley Fabrications firesleeve meets the requirements of EN 45545-2, making it suitable for specification on new-build and refurbished rolling stock in the UK and across Europe. Compliance documentation is available on request.
EN 45545-2 compliant · ISO 11925-2 · UL94 V0 · MSHA certifiedTrains use hydraulic systems for braking, door mechanisms and pantograph operation. Hoses running close to hot components or electrical sources are a fire risk — particularly in the underframe, where debris impact and heat are constant concerns.
Firesleeve over hydraulic hose runs contains a hose failure, preventing pressurised fluid spray from reaching ignition sources and buying critical evacuation time for passengers and crew.
Modern electric and hybrid trains carry high-voltage traction cables throughout the vehicle. Firesleeve provides thermal insulation and dielectric protection — rated to 30kV+ — reducing the risk of electrical fire from short circuits or arc faults in the wiring loom.
Air brake systems, suspension and door mechanisms rely on pneumatic lines that run the length of the vehicle. Firesleeve protects these lines from both radiant heat and mechanical abrasion caused by vibration, ensuring system reliability over long service intervals.
Trackside cabinets, signal heads and level crossing mechanisms contain wiring exposed to weather, vandalism and heat from nearby equipment. Firesleeve protects cable runs from the elements and provides a fire barrier where wiring passes through confined steel enclosures.
During heavy maintenance, trains are often partially stripped with cables and hoses exposed. Firesleeve makes retrofit straightforward — our Hook & Loop Retrofit sleeve wraps around existing hoses without disconnection, ideal for depot upgrades and refurbishment programmes.
UK rolling stock operates through extremes of heat, cold, rain and salt spray on coastal routes. Firesleeve's silicone coating is outstanding against moisture, UV radiation and temperature cycling — protecting components against the environmental degradation that shortens service life on unprotected hoses and cables.
The properties that matter to rail engineers and procurement teams.
We supply direct to train operators, rolling stock manufacturers, maintenance depots and rail contractors. Standard Firesleeve is available from 4mm to 203mm internal diameter in 15-metre coils or cut lengths. For installations where hoses cannot be disconnected, our Hook & Loop Retrofit sleeve applies over existing lines in place.
